Se existe um projeto que mudou os rumos da engenharia naval militar, esse projeto foi o Tipo XXI. No post de hoje, trago os detalhes da minha montagem do U-2540 Wilhelm Bauer, um kit da Revell na escala 1/144.
Este modelo é especial não só pela engenharia do submarino real, mas por ser a minha primeira incursão no mundo dos submersíveis no plastimodelismo.
Um pouco de história: O sobrevivente do Báltico
O U-2540 é um sobrevivente resiliente. Concluído pela Kriegsmarine no final da Segunda Guerra Mundial (outubro de 1944), ele nunca chegou a participar de patrulhas de combate devido à escassez de combustível e ao colapso iminente do Eixo. Foi afundado pela própria tripulação em maio de 1945, perto do farol de Flensburg.Mas a história não parou por aí:
O Resgate: Em 1957, após 10 anos sob as águas do Báltico, ele foi içado e reformado.
Nova Vida: Renomeado como Wilhelm Bauer, serviu à Marinha Alemã (Bundesmarine) como navio de pesquisa e testes para novas tecnologias até 1980.
Navio-Museu: Hoje, ele descansa no Museu Marítimo Alemão em Bremerhaven, restaurado à sua configuração original da II Guerra Mundial. É o único exemplar do Tipo XXI que ainda pode ser visitado no mundo.
If there is one project that changed the course of naval military engineering, it was the Type XXI. In today’s post, I’m sharing the details of my build of the U-2540 Wilhelm Bauer, a Revell kit in 1/144 scale.
This model is special not only because of the real submarine’s engineering but also because it marks my first foray into the world of submersibles in scale modeling.
A Bit of History: The Baltic Survivor
The U-2540 is a resilient survivor. Completed by the German Kriegsmarine at the end of World War II (October 1944), it never took part in combat patrols due to ongoing fuel shortages and the imminent collapse of the Axis. It was scuttled by its own crew in May 1945 near the Flensburg lighthouse.But the story didn’t end there:
The Rescue: In 1957, after 10 years at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, it was raised and overhauled.
A New Life: Renamed Wilhelm Bauer, it served the German Navy (Bundesmarine) as a research and test ship for new technologies until 1980.
Museum Ship: Today, it rests at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, restored to its original WWII configuration. It is the only Type XXI example left in the world.

O Kit:
Montar um submarino traz desafios diferentes dos aviões ou tanques. O foco aqui está na textura do casco, nas linhas de junção e no detalhamento do convés.
A Montagem
Este foi o meu primeiro submarino e a experiência foi muito interessante. O kit da Revell tem bons detalhes, mas exige atenção em alguns pontos:
Ajustes e Injeção: Notei alguns problemas na injeção do plástico, algo comum em moldes que já circulam há algum tempo. Nada que desanime, mas prepare a lixa!
Uso da Massa Putty: Para garantir que o casco ficasse liso e sem frestas visíveis, recorri à boa e velha massa putty. Nas fotos abaixo, vocês podem notar as correções em branco — usei a massa para nivelar as junções das metades do casco e áreas de encaixe das torres.
Dica de bancada: Em submarinos, qualquer fresta mal fechada aparece muito após a pintura, já que o modelo é basicamente um grande cilindro. O tempo gasto no lixamento é o que define a qualidade do final.
The Kit:
Building a submarine brings different challenges compared to planes or tanks. The focus here is on the hull texture, seam lines, and deck detailing.
The Build
This was my first submarine, and the experience was very engaging. The Revell kit has good details, but it requires attention in a few areas:
Fit and Molding: I noticed some issues with the plastic injection, which is common in older molds. It’s nothing discouraging, but keep your sandpaper ready!
Using Putty: To ensure the hull was smooth and free of visible gaps, I turned to the good old “putty.” In the photos below, you can see the corrections in white—I used the putty to level the seams between the hull halves and the turret attachment points.
Bench Tip: On submarines, any poorly sealed gap becomes very obvious after painting, as the model is essentially one large cylinder. The time spent sanding is what defines the quality of the final finish.
